Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday brought up the importance of local manufacturing and consumption of locally produced goods, stating that Indians need to become "VOCAL FOR LOCAL".  It doesn't matter if you or I support PM Modi's narrative and agendas or not but the idea, of self reliant India does make sense and is worth working towards. A self reliant India will create new employments, it will help in argumenting an upswing in GDP, it will aid the growth of Micro, Mini and small enterprises. There are many industries in our country that we need to promote but before that let's have a look at some industries which will be winner industry (those who will survive COVID-19) and some looser industries (those who will take time of 2-3 years for growing again).

1.Winner Industries-

  • E-Commerce Market Places
  • Entertainment, Streaming & Gaming.
  • Logistics & Dilivery
  • Non- cyclic Business(Toothpaste, Soap, Shampoo, Grocery, Cosmetics etc)
  • Pharmaceutical Business
2. Loser Industries-

  • Economy and Share Market
  • Airlines, Cruise and Travel
  • Investment Banker
  • Employment services
  • Transportation
  • Entertainment and Cinema
  • Construction and Mining

Let's take one beautiful comparrision between the markets of India and their neighbour. We all know that the GDP of China in the world is 2nd. Also GDP per capita is $8,612. The reason behind this you all don't know. Let's have a look at some of the startup's that prevail in China. Due to these the economy of China is maintained as these are their own company not an outsider company.

1.All over the world people are using GOOGLE CHROME but CHINA didn’t allowed to enter chrome. People of CHINA are using UC BROWSER.Everyone in the world is using GOOGLE as search engine but in CHINA people are still using BAIdu. These are made in China itself.

2.There are over 1.75 Billion WHATSAPP users in the world but you will be shocked to know that the people of CHINA still use We Chat.

3. People of CHINA don’t use AMAZON, they instead use ALIBABA.com. They didn’t lead amazon enter in the country.

4.People of china use QQ.com instead of G-mail. In CHINA gmail is blocked.

5. Facebook has a big network all over the world but in CHINA, people instead of facebook are using RENREN. They use WOIBO instead of Twitter.

6. They use YOUKU instead of YOUTUBE.

From seeing the above you must be shocked to see that the people and the government of CHINA are so much patriotic and supportive to it’s Individual and CORPORATE that they support their startups to any end. Now we as INDIANS stand nowhere in comparison to them. Every year China exports 100 billion dollar material and we import only 5 billion dollar. There is a 95 billion dollar trade deficit. So it’s time for us to wait and think of what destruction we have done to our country's economy. We using smartphones of brand OPPO AND VIVO. They are the company of China. Now the time has come that we need to start using our "MADE IN INDIA"products.

Also let's have a look at The Swadeshi movement, part of the Indian independence movement and the developing Indian nationalism, was an economic strategy aimed at removing the British Empire from power and improving economic conditions in India by following the principles of swadeshi which had some success. It was stated in 1905. You know Why? Let's have a look below-

Mahatma Gandhi said of Swadeshi Andolan:

“The cleanest and the most popular form of Swadeshi is to stimulate hand-spinning and hand-weaving and to arrange for a judicious distribution of yarn and cloth so manufactured.”

“Swadeshi is an eternal principle whose neglect has brought untold grief to mankind. It means production and distribution of articles manufactured in one’s own country… Swadeshi is a constructive program.”

“Swadeshi is that spirit in us which restricts us to the use and service of our immediate surroundings to the exclusion of the more remote…  In the domain of politics, I should make use of the indigenous institutions and serve them by curing them of their proved defects. In that of economics, I should use only things that are produced by my immediate neighbours and serve those industries by making them efficient and complete where they might be found wanting. It is suggested that such Swadeshi, if reduced to practice, will lead to the millennium, because we do not expect quite to reach it within our times, so may we not abandon Swadeshi even though it may not be fully attained for generations to come.”

It seems that Gandhi’s prediction is becoming a reality. Swadeshi is what the progressive movement of today is calling, think globally act locally. Swadeshi is a call to the consumer to be aware of the violence caused by supporting industries that result in poverty and harm to workers and environmental degradation. In a world moving towards decentralized, localized organization, we might adapt Gandhi’s strategy, replacing mass production and consumerism with community, and then form the community of communities: the Earth Community.

Impact of the SWADESHI Movement

  • 1.People from all walks of life participated in the movement with the greatest contribution coming from students and women.
  • 2.It resulted in significant decline in the foreign imports during 1905-1908.
  • 3.It led to building of self-reliance or Atma Shakti asserting on national dignity, honor and confidence.
  • 4.The Swadeshi movement led the people to learn to challenge and disobey the British government explicitly without fearing the atrocities of the police and imprisonment.
  • 5.Movement received wide coverage through newspapers and got attention at national level highlighting the true nature of British rule.
  • Q:-Which sectors of India are near to self-reliant?

  • 1.India’s pharmaceutical industry is capable of making finished formulations, and also has domestic manufacturers of several key ingredients used to make them. However, the industry also imports some key ingredients for antibiotics and vitamins currently not manufactured in India. The country is currently trying to encourage domestic firms to make these key ingredients, known as fermentation-based APIs. However, this may take a few years.India’s pharmaceutical industry is capable of making finished formulations, and also has domestic manufacturers of several key ingredients used to make them. • 2.While technology transfer is required for more advanced and critical medical devices, the country does have the capacity to domestically make products like hot water bottles, mercury thermometers, hypodermic needles, wheelchairs and patient monitoring display units, according to some industry executives.
  • 3.Local dyestuff units in India are also heavily dependent on imports of several raw materials, while speciality chemicals for textiles like denim are also imported, according to CII.
  • 4.The Serum Institute of India. It is estimated that about 65% of the children in the world receive at least one vaccine manufactured by Serum Institute. Vaccines manufactured by the Serum Institute are accredited by the World Health Organisation, Geneva and are being used in around 140 countries across the globe in their national immunisation programs, saving millions of lives throughout the world.Serum Institute of India Pvt. Ltd. is now the world's largest vaccine manufacturer by number of doses produced and sold globally (more than 1.3 billion doses) which includes Polio vaccine as well as Diphtheria, Tetanus, Pertussis, Hib, BCG, r-Hepatitis B, Measles, Mumps and Rubella vaccines.
  • 4.Garments:- India is known for exporting a huge amount of cotton sari, cotton scarf, chicken kurta and sari and silk sari. Simply you can say India is a master in this industry. You can see many small firms are there in every corner of the country.
  • 5. DRDO developed low costs, high volume products like masks,PPE kits and multi patient ventilators. IIT's and Indian Railway also came up with low cost ventilators. Daily, India is producing 2 lakhs of N-95 masks and PPE kit. This throws a little light on India's capability of becoming self reliant.
  • GOOD NEWS OR WORSE NEWS:- "FIRMS EXITING CHINA: AN OPPORTUNITY FOR INDIA"

  • After multiple allegations from different parts of the the world, China has become a new hotspot(not for the number of cases but, because of the anti-China sentiments of the non aligned nations). The global anti- Chinese sentiments is at its peak and is highest since the 1989 Tiananmen Square crackdown". Trump extreme vision views China as an economic and national security threat and thus a serious challenge to the worldide adopted Western democracies. With this, the US have suggested many of its MNC( present in China) go move out from there as soon as possible.
  • Of course it would be lot easier if they move from China to India, rather than to any other land. With cheap labour, with such ease of doing business and with so diverse demography, India will be perfect spot to settle a business of any magnitude. Also not unknown of the fact, INdia sees this as an opportunity, both for its unemployed labour force and for its dying economy.
  • Many Indian states like Gujrat, Maharastra, Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu are coming up with special offers for such firms who want to move their base from China to India. In fact as many as 100 US companies keen on exiting China are seriously considering India as new destination. The companies include Lockheed Martin, Adobe , Honeywell, Boston Scientific and Cisco Systems as well as global delivery service providers like UPS and FED EX. Also not only US but many other countries like South Korea want to leave China and move their manufacturing unit to India. The South Korean company like Hyundai and Pasco are in talks as well, undoubtedly, India will be the next favourite for investments.
  • "Indian product might be expensive as compared to the Chinese or some other products but nothing is expensive than missed opportunity."
  • Now coming back to the Indian products, people need to realise their role to make Indian brands go global. Buying domestically produced products and promoting them should become new norm. We should provide feedback to the Indian companies regarding their quality and performance. So they can raise the products  standard in terms of cost and quality to make it as par the global level and utilise this opportunity.
